It was international women’s day on 8 March and I was very honoured to be part of a panel discussion on Leveraging AI for Diversity and Inclusion at the Women in Tech Event.

The event was hosted at the AWS Training Center in Cape Town and was oversubscribed, attended by women from all across Cape Town.

Leveraging AI for Diversity and Inclusion

The hot topic of Women under-representation

The numbers are clear on the matter, women are grossly under-represented in the tech space. Women led businesses receive less than 3% of all available funding according to most sources. So of course it was interesting to discuss whether AI can somehow help with this trend.

We discussed bias in AI – mostly due to the nature of AI models and training, including the data that is used to train these models. AI is bias, because humans are biased and unfortunately it represents no solution when it comes to help easing the gender funding gap.

AI in Education and Learning

The great news is that AI in bridging the gap for access to information, useful content and learning. Growing up without access to a library, the internet is going to be a thing of the past. Young people today can access most the knowledge available on the internet using AI tools like ChatGPT and even on mobile WhatsApp with MobileGPT.

AI can help young people study, write better, understand concepts and even write code.
